Packing yourself - tips for success

If you wish to pack for yourself we are happy to offer you the following tips:

  1. Do not use newspaper as a packing material - the ink will transfer, use butchers paper instead.
  2. Items to empty: wardrobes, desk drawers, furniture with doors.
  3. Pot plants - do not water them for a few days prior to moving.
  4. Tips for packing glass: Wrap well and make sure boxes are well cushioned top, bottom and sides.
  5. Tips on packing small stuff - start packing small things you will not need well before the moving date - it takes longer than you think!
  6. Complete packing at least a day before your move.
  7. Tape bottom of boxes, use proper tape not sellotape. Place heavy items at the bottom and lighter ones at the top.
  8. Use bubble wrap on vases, mirrors, pictures.
  9. Put 'Fragile' stickers on all boxes with breakable items.

How to pack a box:

  • Tape bottom
  • Screwed-up newspaper on bottom and sides
  • Layer of heavy items wrapped in plain paper
  • Use scrunched-up newspaper between layers
  • All items should fit tightly so there is no movement
  • Do not overload boxes
  • Clearly mark contents of box, whether it is fragile and which room it is going to
